A Journey ThroughCenturies of Faith
From medieval origins to modern sanctuary, discover the remarkable story of St Saviour's.
Medieval Origins
King Alfred the Great (849-899) was Lord of the Manor of Leofshema, an important Saxon settlement at the confluence of the rivers Quaggy and Ravensbourne. The parish was dominated by a large Catholic Church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 918, the Manor was given to St Peter's Abbey in Ghent following Elthruda's marriage to Count Baldwin III of Flanders.
Parish Founded
A local French Catholic lady offered her house on Morley Road and Mass was first said there on 27th May 1894 by Fr Sheehan of Blackheath. The parish was founded that same year and Fr McClymont was appointed as the first resident priest, re-establishing the Catholic faith in Lewisham after centuries of suppression following the English Reformation.
Church Opens
The foundation stone was laid on 24th April 1909 and the church was officially opened by Bishop Peter Amigo on 9th December. The Lord and Lady Mayor of London attended, as did the Sheriffs of London. Architect Claude Kelly designed the Italianate building in Danish red brick with tiled courses. The first iteration consisted of the nave, apsidal sanctuary, and the Lady Chapel.
Campanile Completed
The 126-foot Campanile was completed, topped by a 12-foot statue of Christ the King weighing 3.5 tons. The statue looks out on the town, a monument to Catholic piety and a lodestone for parishioners. Illuminated at night, it commemorates the Centenary of Catholic Emancipation and remains an iconic Lewisham landmark.
Jubilee Sanctuary
St Saviour's was designated a special sanctuary during the Jubilee Year of Hope. The parish welcomes new visitors and pilgrims daily and has introduced new services and Masses to serve them. Today, our parishioners come from over 80 countries, united by a shared belief in Christ and the Catholic Church.
