Our Lady ofSorrows

The Litany of Our Lady of Sorrows is a devotional prayer that honours the Blessed Virgin Mary in her unique participation in the suffering of her Son. Through this litany, we invoke Mary under her many titles as the Mother of Sorrows - Mater Dolorosa - who stood faithfully at the foot of the Cross.

The Seven Sorrows of Mary have been a focus of Catholic devotion for centuries: the prophecy of Simeon, the flight into Egypt, the loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple, the meeting on the way to Calvary, the Crucifixion, the taking down from the Cross, and the burial of Jesus.

This litany is particularly appropriate during Lent, on the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows (15 September), and whenever we wish to unite our own sufferings with those of Christ and His Blessed Mother.

Litany of Our Lady of Sorrows
September is traditionally dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, whose feast day falls on 15 September, the day after Holy Cross Day. The seven sorrows of Mary are the Prophecy of Simeon; the Flight into Egypt; the Loss of Jesus in the Temple; meeting Jesus carrying the Cross; the Crucifixion; receiving the dead Body of her Son; and the Burial of her Son and closing of the Tomb. In art, Our Lady of Sorrows is often depicted having her heart pierced by as many as seven swords, recalling the prophecy of Simeon, "and a sword shall pierce your own heart...".
