The Novena to the Holy Spirit is considered the oldest novena in the Church, having its origin in the nine days the Apostles and Mary spent in prayer between the Ascension of Our Lord and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
Through this novena, we ask the Holy Spirit to fill us with His seven gifts: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. These gifts perfect the virtues and enable us to live as true disciples of Christ.
This novena is traditionally prayed in the nine days between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday, but may be prayed at any time when seeking the guidance, strength, and consolation of the Holy Spirit.
