The Novena to the Sacred Heart is one of the most beloved devotions in the Catholic Church. It honours the physical heart of Jesus as the symbol of His divine love for humanity - a love so great that He gave His life for our salvation.
Devotion to the Sacred Heart was promoted by St Margaret Mary Alacoque following her visions of Christ in the 17th century. Jesus revealed to her His desire that the faithful honour His Heart and promised abundant graces to those who do so.
This novena is traditionally prayed in the nine days leading up to the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart (the Friday after Corpus Christi), but may be prayed at any time throughout the year when seeking Christ's mercy and love.
